Why choose ‘Cotswold Journeys’ – and some information about the people connected with the company.
After twenty-one years of organising holidays here, immersed in the Cotswolds as we are, we would like to think that we offer unrivaled expertise in the region, whether it be our extraordinary knowledge of its footpaths, or its villages, hotels or its endless possibilities for any kind of tailor-made holiday. So many companies claiming expertise in the region are at best located at its fringes – we are located near the summit of Cleeve Hill, the highest point of the Cotswolds and at the region’s very heart. Here are a few details about who we are:
The founder of ‘Cotswold Journey’s’ is an acknowledged expert on the region. He has written several books on the Cotswolds, and was the founder in 1993 of ‘Cotswold Walking Holidays’, a business that was sold in 2011 so that he might concentrate not only on walking holidays in the Cotswolds but on the region in all its guises. Christopher researched and devised many of what have become classic village to village walking routes – the Cotswold Ring, the Heart of the Cotswolds, the Cotswold, the South Cotswold Ring. Over the years he has come to know not just the footpaths of the region where he lives and works, but its many other often overlooked facets. Whenever possible he personally guides vistors around the region he knows so well.
For many years he travelled professionally around the world, particularly to Italy, China and Russia. He speaks fluent French and Italian and is currently writing the biography of Philip Morrell, the founder of Voyages Jules Verne and the owner of the ‘Royal Barge’ that carried the British royal family along the Thames during the pageant that formed part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.
Chris is a fashion, editorial & advertising photographer based in the Cotswolds. He has a passion for the story telling process and takes his inspiration from many sources – people, history, film and landscapes – using them to develop the stories in his images. He is an acclaimed equine and landscape photographer.
Before taking early retirement, Steve worked for 30 years at Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum, where he eventually filled the post of Museum & Collections Manager. He has a profound knowledge of the history and architecture of Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, and especially the county’s medieval churches. A member of the Gloucester Diocesan Advisory Committee on the Care of Churches, he is also Chairman of the Gloucestershire Local History Association and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. With a special interest in pilgrimages, he has guided our tours both in the Cotswolds and along the Camino de Santiago in France and Spain.
Chris (not to be confused with Christopher!) is one of the people who will help create your holiday. Gloucestershire born and bred, living in the celebrated village of Painswick ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’, he has spent all of his working life in the travel industry. A passionate outdoorsman, Chris has an enthusiasm for countryside activities and sports enjoying shooting and walking; he is also an avid skiier and sailor.
Shoko is our Japanese connection. A resident of Tokyo, she is a professional editor and travel writer and sometime tour guide. After a year’s stay, she knows England, and particularly the Cotswolds, very well. In that time she learnt to appreciate and love English landscapes and traditions, especially the public footpath system, which she has followed in Devon, Dartmoor, the Lake District and the Cotswolds. Lots of Japanese visitors have little time to stay in the Cotswolds (sometimes only 1 hour!) but as a champion of the area she is always happy to help out using her knowledge and expertise.
Marion Mako is a historic garden and landscape historian and designer. She lives in the heart of the Cotswolds and her knowledge of its gardens is unparalleled. As well as the internationally renowned Hidcote and Kiftsgate, she has access to many private gardens that are gems all but unknown to visitors. Marion has led one of our tours to Italy and is available in the Cotswolds as a private guide for tailor-made itineraries both for individuals and for private groups. Please ask for availability.
Charlotte is one of the people who will book your accommodation and prepare the information for your holiday. Based in the heart of the English countryside just outside the village of Painswick, Charlotte mainly enjoys what the Cotswolds have to offer from the saddle. Her passion for horses means she is familiar with routes in and around the Cotswolds. A competitive grassroots event rider, Charlotte regularly competes in events across the region, such as the prestigious Badminton Horse Trails (a great attraction if you are visiting the Cotswolds in May).
"And last, but not least of course, we enjoyed the walk through the lovely Cotswold fields, meadows, woods and villages"
